    Knowing how to use knives skillfully is the foundation of all cooking, and doesn’t have to be scary or frustrating. Many home and even professional cooks don’t always wield a knife correctly, which increases food preparation time and makes the process harder and less safe than it should be. Simply put, good knives are the foundation of a well-equipped kitchen. This class remedies all these basic issues: you will learn how to slice, dice, chop, and much more in the safest and most efficient manner. This class will even guide you through the practice of keeping your knives sharp and handling them correctly.

    Find out what's hot this spring in the garden! Judy Rockwood from Rockwood Gardens will talk plants and gardening. She will bring plants to display and will talk about vegetable gardening in containers, fairy gardens and using tropical plants to give a wow factor to your landscaping.

  5. Introduction to Acrylic Painting

    April 13, 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM @ South Side Neighborhood Center

    Acrylic is the newest of all the art mediums, having been invented in the middle of the 20th century. Come and join in this class and learn about the tools and materials used to complete a painting. Paints, brushes, knives, paint scrapers, palettes, paint mediums and other possible materials will be discussed. You make take notes or bring materials to experiment. Instructor William Eddy will be available to answer all questions.

  6. Basic Sign Language 2 Starts

    Develop a high level of ability and confidence when manually communicating with individuals who are deaf in occupational, as well as social situations. Prerequisite: Sign Language 1

    Learn to make healthy, GLUTEN FREE party favorites that can be used for hors d’oeuvres. In addition, other GLUTEN FREE ideas for tasty treats will be presented. Instructor is Deb Hendrickson, former chef at Cuddy’s Center at the University of Alaska- Anchorage. Samples and recipes will be provided.

  8. 10 Easy to Grow Medicinal Plants and How to Use Them

    April 15, 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM @ Black River Beach Neighborhood Center

    Did you know that you can easily grow your own healing garden? Look at ten plants that grow easily, are safe and gentle and have a variety of uses. There will be seeds and mini-pots of some of your plantings to take home, use and learn about throughout the year. Find out about some of the healing recipes using these plants, whether they’re used for teas, soups, foods or on the skin as salves, cleansing sprays and oils. This class is a great way to start your herbal medicine cabinet! Instructor is Laurie Stiers-Foltz, MSN, RN, FNP, BS Holistic Nutrition, Certified Clinical Herbalist.

    Appetizers, also called starters, are the first course of a meal and are served in small portions because more courses usually follow. Because they are smaller in size, appetizers are usually heightened in flavor and, like the amuse, are intended to get your palate and internal organs stimulated in preparation for the remainder of the meal. Menu includes: Tomato Bruschetta with Toasted Baugettes, Olive Tapanade with pita chips and (Garnish) Green onion flowers.

  10. Explore Winona Senior Excursion

    April 16, 7:15 AM @ Winona, MN

    Start your trip out with a stop at Bloedow’s Bakery in Winona, voted the best doughnut shop in Minnesota. Then join us as we have an on-board guide show us the beautiful stain glass historical buildings in Winona, including churches and banks. Lunch will follow (on your own). In the afternoon, we’ll visit the Polish museum and shop at Watkins Retail store before heading home.

  11. Beaded Eye Glass Holder or ID Lanyard Class

    April 16, 10:30 AM - 11:45 AM @ South Side Neighborhood Center

    Create an eye glass holder or ID lanyard out of seed beads, various glass beads and decorative pewter accent beads. There will be an assortment of colors and beads to choose from. It is a chance to express your own personal style! Instructor is Jane Galstad. If making an ID lanyard, please bring your ID badge so that your lanyard is finished correctly to fit the ID.

  12. Drawing for Beginners Class Starts

    April 20, 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM @ South Side Neighborhood Center

    Guided by William Eddy using “The Natural Way to Draw,” you will be asked to shift your focus to the habits of creative expression. The structured exercises will provide a meaningful experience for beginners or a refresher for the advanced student. You will explore your creativity, increase your visual perception and participate in artistic self-expression. Materials needed are a Newsprint Pad at least 14”x17” and soft crayon or CONTE’ crayon, pencils, and charcoal.

  13. Vision Board Workshop

    April 21, 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM @ Black River Beach Neighborhood Center

    Make your dreams a reality! This transformative exercise offers a simple way to change your life for the better. Vision boards are a practical, effective approach to identifying and achieving your goals. Cheri Haug will share concrete advice and motivational anecdotes designed to help you utilize vision boards in your own daily life. This class is a compliment to the Goal Setting Workshop but it’s not required to take both classes. Some materials will be provided. Please bring the following: old magazines that we can cut up as well as decorative papers, markers, glue and scissors.

  14. Senior Casino Fun Day

    April 23, 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM @ Black River Beach Neighborhood Center

    Test your luck at the Casino Fun Day. You are sure to find something you enjoy with Blackjack, Roulette, Craps, Horse Racing, Chuck-a-luck and Bingo. Win prizes! There will be a baked chicken dinner with scalloped potatoes and a dessert served at noon.

    Come join in the festivities at this free family event. There will be Cinco de Mayo themed games, crafts, face painting, prizes and more! We will have a free lunch to accompany all the fun. The piñata games will begin at 1:00pm, don’t miss out! Pre-registration is recommended and a special prize will be given to those who do.

Rehab for Weight Loss provides tools anyone can use to change old eating patterns, get enough exercise and lose weight without going on a diet. Cheri Haug, author of Rehab for Weight Loss: A Humorous Approach to Getting Skinny and Healthy, will share her secrets and how she lost 57 pounds. Nutrition, Certified Clinical Herbalist. Recipes will be available to take home. *Classes meet once a week for four total meetings.

Laughter oxygenates your brain and makes you feel more energetic, helping to maintain a positive mental attitude in difficult times. No special clothing is needed and this class is something anyone can do.

  21. Dare to Paint Abstracts Class Starts

    Come and develop your artistic skills. Learn to use your feelings, fantasy and spontaneity. Using acrylic paints, create something unique entirely by yourself. You will understand the artistic method of painting and using art tools. William Eddy will assist you in developing your sense of the primary picture elements, like line, shape, size, color, tone and texture.
