| 9.20 School Crossing Guards
(A) Pursuant to Wisconsin Statute, Section 349.215, and any amendments or modifications thereto, the Chief of Police is hereby authorized to appoint adult school crossing guards for the protection of persons who are crossing a highway in the vicinity of a school. The Chief of Police may also provide training for said school crossing guards prior to any appointment.
(B) The school crossing guards appointed by the Chief of Police shall wear an insignia or uniform which shall designate them as school crossing guards and shall be equipped with signals or signs to direct traffic to stop at school crossings.
(C) Any school crossing guards appointed under this section by the Chief of Police who shall be employees of the City or paid by the City shall be subject to prior Common Council approval.
(D) Any school crossing guard not an employees of the City shall be properly certified by the Chief of Police and shall file a certificate of insurance in the sum of not less than $500,000 for bodily injury, naming the City of La Crosse as additional insured. The City shall not be liable for crossing guards that are not employees of the City and the Chief of Police may terminate appointments of non-City employee crossing guards for unsatisfactory performance.
