ARPA 2023 Funding for Non-Profits Wafer Food Pantry

Wafer Food Pantry

WAFER is the largest food pantry serving all of La Crosse  County and La Crescent, MN. For many people WAFER is the last resort. We serve about 1500 families (about 3000 people) monthly.  Nearly 35,000 total individuals were served in 2022.

WAFER distributed about nearly 18,000 food packages in 2022.

A food package provides each person in a family about 4 to 5 days worth of food.

Our work includes using "Nudges" strategy to guide equipment decisions for product display. We accept fresh product donations to distribute to low-income food insecure population.

Success:

75% of pantry patrons will indicate they are able to eat a healthier diet because of access to healthy foods at WAFER

With ARPA funding from the City of La Crosse, we purchased and install large cold storage walk-in freezer.

"The new facility opened in May 2023 and we are eager to realize the benefits of this equipment -- increased efficiencies, decreased manpower, and increased ability to accept donations. It is so disappointing to decline donation offers because we have no room to store prior to distribution, and this situation will be remedied."
