On Friday, May 1, 2020 at approximately 2:19PM, La Crosse Police, as well as first responders, were dispatched to 223 Lang Drive, for a report of a fight with an injured person occurring in the Menards parking lot. Initial investigation indicates that Matthew L. Kinstler (50 years old), was apparently upset with the victim, Russell W. Paulson (79 years old), due to the fact Kinstler felt Paulson had parked too closely to the vehicle Kinstler was driving.

A verbal argument occurred, which quickly escalated into a physical altercation. During the physical altercation, Russell Paulson sustained injuries and was transported to Mayo Clinic Health System for treatment. Unfortunately, Mr. Paulson died as a result of the injuries he sustained.

At the time of the incident, Matthew Kinstler was arrested and referred on charges of Substantial Battery and Disorderly Conduct. This remains an active investigation, as Investigators continue to speak to witnesses and review evidence. We are also consulting with the La Crosse County District Attorney’s Office.
