Public Service Hours (walk-in) are as follows:

Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the lobby of City Hall.

The City Clerk's desk is at the south end of the lobby.

All license/permit applications are available on the Licenses & Permits page.

All forms are available on the Forms Chart page.

Applications/forms, including any applicable filing fee, for the City Clerk may be mailed, dropped off during public service hours or deposited in the GREEN drop box on the north side of City Hall.  Place application and respective fee in a sealed envelope to the attention of City Clerk's Office.

Please review the following procedures before going to the License & Permit Chart below.

  • Applicant completes application and pays fees (cash, check payable to City Treasurer or credit with a convenience fee). Incomplete or illegible applications will not be accepted.
  • Application is processed internally according to local and state laws.
  • Each owner, officers and/or manager of applicant is subject to a background check conducted by the La Crosse Police Department.
  • Each applicant, including any owner, officers and/or manager of applicant, is checked for any delinquency owed to the City (including, but not limited to, Parking Utility, Municipal Court, City Treasurer, Utilities Office). If any delinquency exists, there will be a hold placed on the license/permit until proof of payment is presented.
  • Once internal process is complete, the license/permit is issued.
  • If any outstanding fines/fees/charges/taxes are due the City, there will be a hold placed on the license until proof of payment is presented.
  • Any person not filing the application for any permit or license provided for under Chapters 6, 10, 39, 40 and 115 of the Municipal Code in a timely manner may be subject to a penalty equal to twice the license fee.

Note:
Pursuant to Council Resolution 2005-12-026 (adopted Dec. 8, 2005) there is hereby established a minimum non-refundable amount of $50.00 with respect to applications for licenses, permits or other privileges or approvals by the Common Council or other City officers, except that the license or permit fee or other approval fee for matters that are denied shall not be refunded, nor those matters that are withdrawn following the expenditure of out-of-pocket expenses such as, but not limited to, publication fees, personal service costs or mailing costs.
