Only pre-qualified dumpster contractors are issued permits to place dumpsters on the public right-of-way. Pre-qualification requires submittal of a bond and insurance certificate which are tracked in the Contractor/Contract file.

When is a permit required?

A permit is required any time a dumpster is placed within the City's Right of Way.

Cost

35 for a 7-day permit. $70 fee if no permit applied for.

Insurance

Public liability of not less than $200,000 for one person; $500,000 for one accident; and property damage insurance of $100,000.

The certificate of insurance MUST name the City of La Crosse as Additional insured.

Regulations

  • Name, address, and phone number of lessor visible on each dumpster
  • Dumpster equipped with reflectorized tape or other reflector devices and shall be equipped with flashers on both front and rear
  • No dumpster shall be placed in a moving lane of traffic or interfere with public works construction
  • Placement on streets in legal parking zones only

Security

A bond of $3,000 by an approved insurance or security company is required to cover any damage that may occur to City property.
