The City of La Crosse Fire Department and City of La Crosse Water Utility are partnering to launch the Hydro Helpers program, designed to actively involve children in helping firefighters, neighbors, and the La Crosse community. By participating, your child will be responsible for caring for a hydrant during the winter months, to help save the Fire Department precious minutes during a fire. Care includes shoveling around the hydrant after a snowstorm and checking for any damage. After caring for their hydrant all season, Hydro Helpers will be invited to social event with City of La Crosse Firefighters; details to come at a later date. Safety Tips & Guidelines:
1. Each child should be responsible for one hydrant.
2. To the best of their ability, the child should clear (with parental guidance/supervision):
a. Approximately a 3–4-foot circle around the hydrant and a 3-foot path to the street.
b. This should only be done on quiet, residential streets under the supervision of an adult.
3. Report the following to the La Crosse Water Utility (608) 789-7536:
a. Caps missing or broken.
b. Water leaking from your hydrant.
4. Hydrants will be monitored to be sure you child is a good caretaker.
5. Do not step into the road while clearing the hydrant; have an adult help if the snow piles are too high.
6. Wear bright colored or reflective clothing while caring for your hydrant.
7. If the hydrant you are adopting is across the street, an adult should accompany the child.
8. If the hydrant is not on your property, be sure to ask your neighbor’s permission first.
Requirements
1. Must live in the City of La Crosse.
2. Any child that is 17 years old or younger may participate in the program.
