About the Program

The City of La Crosse's Memorial Tree and Bench Program offers residents a way to honor and celebration loved ones, accomplishments and milestones by contributing to the community's natural and recreational spaces. Participants can donate a tree or bench to be placed in one of the city’s parks or along scenic trails. Each tree or bench is accompanied by a personalized plaque, creating a lasting tribute that also enhances the environment and public enjoyment. This program not only commemorates individuals but also fosters a sense of community and continuity, enriching La Crosse’s green spaces for future generations.

The La Crosse Parks, Recreation and Forestry’s Memorial Tree Program offers an opportunity for individuals, families, or businesses to honor friends, relatives or milestones. In addition to commemorating your loved one, the purchase of a memorial tree offers a valuable contribution to the community’s green spaces.

How do I participate in this program?
If you are interested in donating a tree or bench to the La Crosse Parks Dept., please complete the Memorial Bench & Tree Request form. You may return your form via email to meyers@cityoflacrosse.org or by mail to City of La Crosse Parks, Recreation & Forestry, 400 La Crosse St. La Crosse, WI 54601.

Where will the trees be planted? 
Trees can be planted in various city parks and public spaces. The donor may express preference of location and species of tree to be planted. The exact location, however, will be discussed and chosen based on species requirements and site conditions. 

What types of trees can be planted? 
We offer a variety of tree species that are suitable for the La Crosse climate and soil. A list of suggested tree species can be found here

How much does it cost to plant a memorial tree?
The cost of a memorial tree is $350. Fees cover the cost of the tree, planting, and maintenance. 

Does the memorial tree come with a plaque? 
The cost of a memorial plaque is $350 and is not included in the cost of the tree. Donor must select that they wish to have a plaque at the time the request form is completed. Plaques are customized and bronze cast. 

Can I supply my own plaque or tree?
No. Currently, to maintain consistency throughout the Memorial Tree Program, all trees and plaques must be purchased through our program.

When will the tree be planted?
Trees are typically planted in the spring and fall seasons. Fall memorial trees requests are due no later than September 1 of each year, while spring requests are due no later than March 1 each year. Specific plantings dates may differ depending on species and availability, for example: Oak trees are only planted in the spring. Payment must be received and processed to complete your order. 

How will the tree be maintained?
The City of La Crosse Parks Dept. will take care of the tree's initial planting and ongoing maintenance to ensure its health and longevity.

Can I attend the tree planting? 
Please contact the City of La Crosse Parks Dept. at 608-789-7560 if you wish to coordinate attendance at the tree planting.

Memorial Benches

The La Crosse Parks, Recreation and Forestry’s Memorial Bench Program allows individuals, families, organizations, or businesses to commemorate special events, honor individuals or as memorials to loved ones. Benches are made of durable cast steel providing a lasting tribute to be enjoyed by the community for years to come. Benches can be placed in various city parks and public spaces. The donor may express preference of location. The exact location, however, will be discussed and chosen based on location viability and existing or new structural needs. For Riverside Park Bench requests, please contact Friends of Riverside Park Foundation at 608-397-3336.

Can I put a plaque on an undedicated bench? 
No. Each bench is custom made cast-iron with inlaid plaques. We do not overlay plaques on existing benches. 

 

Can I supply my own bench?
No. Currently, to maintain consistency throughout the Memorial Bench Program and within city parks all benches must be purchased through our program.

What colors are available? 
The standard memorial benches throughout City Parks are hunter green. Should a park have differing colors, benches may be ordered to match existing installed benches.

How much does it cost to donate a memorial bench?
Benches are currently priced at $5,000. This includes a custom inlaid plaque.

Do benches come with a cement pad? 
No. Benches must be installed on a cement pad, and newly poured slabs must comply with ADA requirements. New Benches may replace un-dedicated benches on existing cement pads. New cement pads are currently $1,000. 

When will the bench be installed?
Benches are installed seasonally, and weather permitting.  This includes installation of cement slabs.

Can I attend a bench installation?

We do not encourage attendance at bench installations. The process of bench installation can be long and may require equipment. We will notify you when you bench has been installed.
