Information
The Streets Department is responsible for the following operations of the city:
- Street rehabilitation
- Crack sealing (concrete asphalt and pavement)
- Chip sealing
- Patch street utility openings
- Repair and replace settled or damaged curb and gutter
- Grade and patch alleys
- Potholes
- Sweep city streets (16,000 miles of curb and gutter each year)
- Empty trash from downtown containers
- Assist Refuse & Recycling Dept with brush collection citywide, once annually
- Assist Refuse & Recycling Dept with leaf collection (just over 1,000 tons each year)
- Assist Refuse & Recycling Dept with collecting Christmas trees
- Clean up debris from accidents, spills, and windstorms
- Build and remove dikes for flood control
- Provide barricades for contract work, city crew work, parades, and public events
- Maintain all decorative street lighting (1,000 poles), traffic signals (600), and signs (15,000)
- Paint street traffic markings, crosswalks, light poles, and handicapped-accessible ramps
- Plow snow from city streets (224 centerline miles of streets)
- Salt and sand city streets
- Remove snow from sidewalks on bridges, city parking lots, and parking ramps
- Provide repair service, preventative maintenance, and lubrication service for most city vehicles
- Purchase fuel and distribute to all city departments
