In the Spring, sweepers start clearing winter sand and debris from the streets as soon as weather permits.

First and third shift, there are two sweepers working Monday through Friday. The arterial streets are swept first and then crews move to the residential streets. The entire City of La Crosse is swept approximately once every two weeks. Due to night sweeping, many property owners are unaware that their streets are frequently swept.

In the Fall, sweeping is performed to clean up leaves and to prevent storm inlets and storm sewers from plugging. There are extra sweeper operators put on to keep up during this season. Implementation of alternate side parking is also a great assistance to the impacted departments at this time.

  • Leaves and debris from your property should not be placed in the street. If you have a pickup of these items scheduled, place it on the boulevard.
  • Utilities, 608-789-7536, may notify the property owner if there is an excess amount of materials being placed in the street.
  • Place garbage and recycling carts on boulevards and not in the street. This also helps prevent damage to your carts when streets are plowed.

During the winter months, sweepers are inoperable.
